The 2006 Hip Hop film Waist Deep starring Tyrese Gibson and Meagan Good has quite a bit in common with the opera Girl of the West (La fanciulla del West).

Waist Deep is a 2006 drama-action film directed by Vondie Curtis-Hall starring Tyrese Gibson and Meagan Good. It is loosely based on the 1967 film Bonnie and Clyde, which features the two main characters on the road, trying to avoid police, and committing bank robberies together.

The Girl of the West (La fanciulla del West) was first performed at the Metropolitan Opera in New York in 1910. The girl runs a saloon and bank in Old California where she falls into the arms of a stranger whose only known profession is a bank robber.

What do the modern-day Bonnie & Clyde movie Waist Deep and the classic opera The Girl of the West have in common? For starters, both are set in the American West and have strong female leads who try to save the 'robber' they've fallen in love with.

Hip Hop Orchestrated was able to connect with the Gantt Center, Opera Carolina, and WDAV Calssical Public Radio to collaboratively dissect preconceived notions associated with hip hop, its culture, and its parallels with opera. Join us at the Gantt Center for two weekends of movie, opera and conversation.

on April 15 during Waist Deep: The Opera Cut, the film will be shown with deep dive expert commentary and community dialogue to explore the connections between Hip Hop filmmaking and Opera productions as viewed through the parallels found between Waist Deep & Girl of the West. We will also explore into the representation of black fatherhood in American society while exploring the connection between the film and the Zun Lee: Father Figure Exhibit.

Once the patrons have had The Opera Cut Experience, a week later, on April 21 it is time for the Opera Carolina experience. This 2 for 1 Deal grants Waist Deep: The Opera Cut ticket holders access to the Final Dress Rehearsal of Opera Carolina’s The Girl of the West on April 21. During this full run through, audience members will enjoy a Q&A intermission.

A lucky few who attend the April 15 event will get to join Hip Hop Orchestrated in the Mezzanine seats to be a part of the #HipHoperaTweets Experience! These selected museum+opera patrons will get to follow along and join the live social media hashtag conversation on their mobile device to help post, tweet, and gram the parallels between Waist Deep as they watch the opera Girl of the West unfold on the stage before them.
